Good mobile web page design

Following are some aspects of good mobile web page design:

  • Keep content focused. Mobile device users are typically browsing for specific information such as news headlines, weather, information about store/restaurant location, and so forth. They are typically not interested in reading large amounts of text.

  • Keep content light. Bandwidth and cost should be taken into consideration when deciding on content such as images. Thumbnail images do not overwhelm the page or use excessive resources.

  • Design the content for multiple screen sizes and layouts, such as portrait and landscape. Content such as banners, logos, and backgrounds should 'stretch' so that they expand or contract.

  • Place the most important information on the top-left part of the page so that it is visible immediately upon loading.

  • Avoid excessive white space, forcing the reader to scroll a long way to reach information.

  • Keep advertisements small and not intrusive. Some material do not work well on small devices, such as pop-ups, pop-unders, and large banners.

  • Consider hardware limitations such as text input using non-qwerty keypads.
